Snorkeling is one of the best ways to get in the water and start exploring the ocean. For beginners, there are fewer variables to manage, you don’t need specialized training, and if you have the right professional snorkeling equipment, you can snorkel for hours on end.
If you don’t have the right professional snorkeling equipment, your time in the water might not be as enjoyable.
Nothing ruins a snorkeling adventure more than a leaky mask, uncomfortable fins, or a flooding snorkel. Here are our tips to help you pick the best snorkel gear.
Every snorkeler needs a mask, a snorkel, and a pair of fins. Which kind you choose all comes down to your personal preference and your budget. If you wear prescription glasses, you also might need to invest in specialty snorkel goggles to help you see while you’re under the water.
There are a wide variety of snorkel masks available in all kinds of shapes and sizes for different snorkelers.
Finding one that perfectly fits your face is all it takes to have a super fun time out in the water.
Snorkeling masks are very similar to scuba diving masks. However, most of them are made of 100% silicon which is softer to provide a better seal, and won’t cramp your face as much.
When it comes to the case of prescription goggles, if you need glasses in your everyday life and you don’t wear contacts, you’ll need to test a few different prescription snorkeling goggles. If you only need glasses to read, and you think that you’ll need to read something under the water, there are tiny magnifying adapters you can add to the inside of the snorkeling goggles to help you see your camera settings, fish guide, etc.
Snorkels seem pretty self-explanatory; it’s a tube you breathe through, nothing else to it, right?
In actuality, not every single snorkel will be the same. When shopping for a snorkel, you want one that fits your goggles well, and is comfortable for you to breathe through since there nothing worse than having to struggle for air while out on the water.
There are a few different options when it comes to purchasing a snorkel. For example, some will have a splash guard to protect the tube from quick dunks in the water. Some also feature a dry valve to help keep water out, along with a purge valve on the bottom to help the snorkeler clear out any water in the snorkel.
The most important thing to keep in mind as you shop for snorkels is the comfort it provides. You want to be able to use it for hours on end, so your snorkel adventures aren’t cut short!
Full Face Snorkel Masks
These units are a relatively new option for snorkelers. They combine the mask and snorkel into one unit that kind of resembles a futuristic helmet. They can be great choices for some, but we find that having individual snorkeling gear works best for most.
You have a wide variety of fin options when it comes to snorkeling. Especially since you won’t be going too deep into the water, you don’t need fins that let you swim miles at a time. However, you still want fins that are comfortable for you, and won’t chafe your feet or strain your legs too much.
When choosing your first pair of fins, you should get more flexible fins if you aren’t very experienced diving. They will be easier to use since they don’t require nearly as much leg strength.
Also, the longer the fins, the faster you’ll go, but the more power you’ll have to use to swim through the water.
Try a few out and see which ones feel the most comfortable to you!
Should you buy a snorkel set to start off with? If you have zero experience in the water snorkeling, then we would recommend you buy each piece in a bundle.
This way you can save some money, plus you’ll have everything you need to get started snorkeling without having to spend hours shopping for each piece.
Keep in mind, however, that each piece won’t fit exactly perfect as it would when buying individually.
You can always upgrade a piece of professional snorkeling equipment in the future though.
